Numismatics is an auxiliary science of archeology that deals with the knowledge of coins or paper currency issued by a nation.
In the same way it is the hobby to collect coins or bills.
The term "numismatic" comes from the Latin word "numisma" which means currency and is from the Greek "nomisma", derived from nomos which means custom.
Numismatics has been known since the Roman Empire, but it was in the 20th century that it began to be treated as a science.
However, numismatics covers two periods. In the beginning there were no non-metallic coins, so there were exchanges of goods and products and, consequently, the people used their higher value products as currency. Then the metallic coin originated. In a second stage, there is the NOTEFILIA, which is the part of the numismatic discipline that studies, collects and disseminates paper money.
In conclusion, numismatics not only studies the currency, but also the different forms of money.
The numismatics, is of utmost importance, since it allows to observe and have knowledge about the exchanges and the economy of the towns as well as its history, geography, religion customs etc ...
In relation to numismatics, there is paleography, iconology, art history, among other sciences that serve to provide knowledge about the history of a people or nation.
